Billy Mills and Visualization
By Adam Appleson
The Story of Billy Mills: Visualizing Your Way To Success At the 1964 Olympics, Native American Billy Mills pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history in the 10,000 meter run. Billy became the only American to win gold in this event. And he did it after nearly falling down when the odds-on favorite, Ron Clarke of Australia, accidentally shoved him during the race. The Obstacles Billy Had to Overcome To Find Success: *He was orphaned by the death of his father at age 12. *Billy could not join a fraternity in college because he was a Native American. He was told "Billy, you are Indian and there is nothing you can contribute."5 *Billy couldn't be roommates with two of his good friends in college because one was an African-American and the other was Caucasian. And that was considered "inappropriate." *While training and racing at the University of Kansas, he often became tired during the later stages of a race. Coaches attributed this to low self-esteem caused by the fact that he was "orphaned", "born into poverty", and a "minority". (Later Billy found out the real reason: he had variable blood sugar levels that would fluctuate drastically during a race). How Did He Do It? There are of course, a number of factors that go into making a winning Olympic athlete. There is hard training, positive thinking, and a healthy diet. But one habit Billy practiced was imagining himself as an Olympic gold medal winner. When he entered the University of Kansas as a freshman, his physiology textbook taught him that the subconscious mind can't tell the difference between what is imagined and what is real. So he started to let his dream come alive in his imagination. Sports psychologist Steve Ungerleider says that a common practice trait among Olympic athletes is to visualize their goal as already accomplished. Visualization Will Work For You So if visualization can work for Olympic champions, why not you? Feel what it's like to have your victory. Bathe yourself in it in your mind's eye. Try making a vision board. And someday, it will be yours.
